Renovation of crumbling houses of Parliament and Westminster palace in London

Recently I decided to go down to London and take some pictures.  The disappointing thing was the canopies over the Houses of Parliament which ruined the pictures a little, I thought it was general restoration work, but it seems like it is far more significant than that.

It could cost over 5  billion pounds to get the Houses of Parliament up to standards.  Much of the stone work is crumbing, the electrical wiring is out of date and there are massive issues with asbestos in the building.  The costs to upgrade the Houses of parliament would be reduced significantly if the residents moved out for a while.

Much of the stone for the Houses of Parliament came from quarries at Anston near Sheffield, I don’t know if this stone is responsible for much of the decay in the building or not.

You will find a ‘White lady’ in the foyer of South Anston Methodist church (see picture at the end of the blog), a gift to the village following previous restoration work.

I personally would like to see Parliament moved out of London to Birmingham or even rotated around our 8 major cities,  the country shouldn’t revolve around London and there is an unfair amount of investment in London compared to the rest of the UK.  It would be better to turn our Houses of Parliament into a massive museum and see if it could earn back some of the repair costs, for the significant investment required in it, if it is possible to renovate the building due to subsidence owing to its close proximity to the

Thames.

Personally our Parliament wouldn’t seem out of place if it was moved to Blackpool Tower Zoo, as these people seem to reside on a different planet to the rest of us in the UK.  It is time for our government to move to a Swiss form of direct democracy, to ensure that the people can always over rule the government on any matter they choose.  The government should serve the will of the people, not their own self interest.

All the best

Tim
