Sheffield F.C. announced on Friday that they were moving back to the birth place of world football in Olive Grove. I decided to go along and take pictures of this new site, locate the ground of Sheffield Wednesday at Olive grove and also take pictures of Hillsborough and Bramall Lane. Mission was accomplished on Saturday and I learnt some interesting facts. You can look at my pictures of Bramall Lane and Hillsborough here. Wednesday’s is a better football ground in my opinion, while United’s has better facilities.
I am sure that you can find Bramall Lane even if a Wednesday supporter, we have played enough derbies there and used to play there before United. Get onto the Shoreham St where the United KOP is located, then find Charlotte St and walk up to Olive grove rd.
Once on Olive grove rd, look for the main entrance of the Sheffield works department, behind the bus stop you will find a brass plate showing where Sheffield Wednesday’s original ground was. The Wednesday at the time only rented this ground and had to move out due to railway expansion. Rather than moving to Carbrook in Sheffield that the supporters chose, the board decided that Hillsborough was the better option.
Before Olive grove Wednesday also played at Highfield, Myrtle Rd and Sheaf House, all very close to Bramall Lane which was used for big matches.
Find Heeley bank rd and follow until you get to Sheffield Works department sports and social club. This is the location of the start of modern day football and the ground Sheffield F.C. will be playing at in the future. Donate to www.sheffieldfc.com ‘s fund raising campaign. I have paid £20 to go to their first match back at the new stadium.
All the best
