You won’t believe this, but one of the most interesting projects to happen in Sheffield will begin here.  The remains of Sheffield castle exist under the old Castle market site.   Some of the castle was uncovered during the building of the Castle market in the 1960’s and was protected, there are expectations much more of the castle will be discovered as an excavation goes ahead.  This area will then be turned into a park.

Sheffield castle was reputed to be one of the largest castles in the North of England, being at the bottom of the old Kingdom of Northumbria.  It was bordered on one side by the river Don and the other by the river Sheaf.  The river Sheaf exists in a concrete culvert and will be opened up again.

The castle was demolished after the English civil war, being a Royalist strong hold.

All the best
