Lordens hill to Victoria st footpath six Dinnington

Footpath six Lordens Hill to Victoria st.

I have been trying to get this area of land cleared up long before the murder of Leonne Weeks by Peter Heeley.  Prior to this, we had a killer clown attack on the very same footpath.   I couldn't get Kevin Barron our local M.P's whose office is within a 1-minute walk to meet me on … Continue reading Footpath six Lordens Hill to Victoria st.

Sheffield used to have some fantastic cinema’s, far superior to the multi screen cinemas of today, which are about profit rather than quality.   I understand this cinema is pretty much still complete, even though the venue is used for Bingo.  I used to love the ABC cinema on Angel st and my favourite was the Gaumont in Barker’s pool, the height of luxury.  What was your favourite cinema in Sheffield? and why?

I have vague memories of the Davys cafe from my childhood.  Davys used to be a local chain of cafes restaurants pre Mc Donalds etc that now litter our High st.  I even remember one as far away as Worksop.  What memories do you have of the Davys cafes and restaurants?

Canada House Sheffield Commercial st.

Sheffield still has some grand old buildings.  Many buildings were destroyed in the 2nd world war, because the Germans managed to hit the city centre, rather than the steelworks they were aiming for.  This building was the Sheffield United Gas and Light company offices.  It was originally known as Panache House and was built in the classical style of a grand Italian villa.  Becoming part of our Nationalised gas industry until 1972.   The building is Grade two listed.  It has been renovated and now has an Oriental restaurant at the base and offices above it.

Sheffield Marples Fitzalan Square Sheffield.

This modern building used to be a hotel until the 2nd world war, when it was struck in a blitz and 70 people lost their life’s.  The next day 7 people were dug out alive from the building and a number of these just walked off.  I remember the Marples from the 1980’s which was a public house in the basement of this building.  The building is now a boring post-war building, not like the original pre-war hotel that existed on the site.

Sheffield lost many great buildings in the 2nd world war, as the German bombers hit the city centre rather than the steelworks they were aiming for.  This Head post office building which is listed and has been refurbished has now become a Hallam University arts building.  It survived both the German bombing and the Sheffield planning department.

Manor Farm South Anston

Photography Anston, Dinnington, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and UK

When my parents moved out of Sheffield in 1966,  both North and South Anston were much smaller villages.   There were a large number of farms in Anston.   You will find a large number of barn conversions in South Anston from the farms that once existed there.  I only know of one remaining farm in South Anston.  Manor farm in South Anston was sold off a number of years ago and a housing estate built around it.

A number of years ago I nearly bought a converted barn in the shade of the farmhouse, but the deal fell through.  You can access the old farmhouse by taking the footpath up the side of St James church.

If you remember any farms in North and South Anston, please let me know.?Manor farm South Anston

After disappearing for 9 miles, the Chesterfield canal reappears at Staveley, where a new Marina has been built.  A large area in Chesterfield will be redeveloped for a Marina and Housing.  I hope you have enjoyed the journey along Chesterfield canal.  I will be retaking the length of the Chesterfield canal with my new Nikon D3300 and will be adding the renovated parts of the canal as they are developed.

Kiveton Norwood tunnel to Staveley canal

Photography Anston, Dinnington, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and UK

From Norwood tunnel to Staveley most of the Chesterfield canal disappears.  You will find old parts of the canal that will never be reused, as the canal needs to be diverted around the housing estate at Killamarsh that was built over it.   Part of the diversion will be through Rother Valley park using the River Rother.  Part of the Norwood tunnel will be re-opened and then there will be a staircase of locks under the Motorway.  From here on most of the canal is nothing but fields.  It reappears again at Renishaw before disappearing into fields.  Eventually, you will reach Staveley and the new Marina there.  If you can donate £40 million towards the restoration of the last nine miles of the canal, donations would be gladly received by the Chesterfield canal trust.

Kiveton canal

Photography Anston, Dinnington, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and UK

The current restoration of the Chesterfield canal stops at the Norwood tunnel Kiveton.  You can see the full journey along the Chesterfield canal here timawellsphotographyandprints.wordpress.com/2017/09/21/west-stockwith-to-chesterfield-canal-via-worksop-and-retford-picture-gallery/

James Brindley built the canal in a shorter period that it is taking to restore the canal.  In those days they didn’t have mechanical machinery and technology but weren’t bogged down with modern day bureaucracy and Elf and safety.

There about 9 miles of the canal to restore, which will cost about £40 million.  Chesterfield canal trust would welcome any donations.

I will be selling my photographic prints in the future, if you are in a desperate need for any please contact me.
